Media & legal Studies a yoke around students neck?

Media Studies and legal Studies: The two subjects have become a pain in the neck for the aspirants who are willing to apply in Delhi University (DU) but could not because both the subjects are not mentioned in the course options on the application form. On Friday, students thronged outside Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, North Campus to enquire about these subjects.

Reacting to it, DU higher officials said that these courses cannot be run in every college. Media Studies is a subject of Mass Media course and it is very vast. There are many colleges in DU which are facilitated with some subjects of Mass Media.  “The courses are not separately mentioned on admission forms. The aspirants who are willing to study Media Studies have to go through the entrance test of Indraprastha College (IP) for Women,” the official added.

Considering the subject value of Media Studies, Dr Manasvani M Yogi, Assistant Professor, IP College for women said that as they are running self financing course, which is known as BA (Honours) Multi Media and Mass Communication, “We count this subject (Media Studies) in the eligibility criteria for the entrance test conducted by our college”.

“Aspirants should have 85 per cent in English subject and 75 per cent in best of four subjects. We count subject Media Studies in best-four policy,” said Yogi. “But this best-four policy is the eligibility criteria for the entrance test not for the direct admission in the college,” she clarified. CBSE passout students are reacting on the issue as CBSE has given consideration to these subjects in the category of their main subjects. Students raised the point that CBSE and DU are not on the same page because DU is considering both the subjects as non academic.

“I studied hard legal Studies in Class XII. And it was the main subject, why is the university not considering the subject in course option list,” said a student at SGTB Khalsa College. DU official further added that as far as the subject legal Studies is concerned, we are in the process to make a proposal and send it to university higher officials. The process can take time. On Day 16, DU registered 3,05,837 online applications and 1,97,725 aspirants made payments. While 64,210 offline forms were sold, 46, 007 applications forms were received.
