MCG to consider no-parking zone on MG road

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is considering a no-parking zone on the Mehrauli-Gurugram (MG) road between Sikanderpur and IFFCO Chowk and Metro stations, in a bid to ease traffic congestion in the area.

Traffic police officials held a meeting with their counterparts from Town and Country planning, Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and MCG departments at the MCG Commissioner’s office on Tuesday to discuss the matter.

Officials of the different department have decided that managements of the various shopping malls on the route have to display parking boards at the front of their respective parking lots.

“It is to be observed that the mall management took parking charge even for non-parking areas and as per the property tax procedure, they are not allowed to do that. If they do this they will have to pay property tax to the MCG, to avoid this they can allow one hour of free parking for the vehicles daily,” a senior official said.

Teams from the traffic police, enforcement wing and DTP enforcement wing will look after traffic movement on the stretch.

The traffic situation around metro stations and malls have always been particularly difficult to manage for cops, with autos and cycle rickshaws taking up one of the lanes and holding up traffic. RTV buses (which serve as shuttle services) also block the movement of traffic.

As per the plan, no vehicle will be allowed to stop or park for a 1.2 kilometer stretch of MG Road. Vehicles will only be allowed to do so in designated parking spaces.

Besides that, no street vendors will be allowed on the stretch. The plan will be applicable from the next week.

However, the MCG has pointed out some areas on the road that can be turned into parking spots for shop owners, visitors to malls and commuter transport vehicles like autos and buses to ensure that metro users do not face any inconvenience.

“Mall management has to display parking space board in front of their premises so that it can be known how much vehicles can be parked in their parking space and how much have already been parked,” senior town and country planner, Sudhir Chauhan said.

“They must also ensure the one-hour free parking facility in their parking space. We will make MG road a zero tolerance road. If anybody parks their vehicles on the stretch it will be jammed by jammers. To release their vehicles the owners will have to pay a fine. MCG is also considering a separate lane for autos, they also use green belts for parking and also use apartment’s greenbelt areas as a parking lot  illegally,” Chauhan added.
