The manager of McDonald's restaurant in South Extension-II has been arrested after water leakage from the outlet damaged properties of a jewellery showroom situated below it.
The accused, Mohit Anand, has been charged with negligence and endangering public safety. A case was registered on the complaint of one Charchit Aggarwal in April. Aggarwal is one of the directors of the jewellery showroom — situated on the first floor of the same building. However, police arrested Anand only after investigation.
The complaint was lodged with the Hauz Khas Police Station and a case was registered under Section 336 of the IPC.
The police sent a letter to the senior authority of McDonald's restaurant as they wanted to know who was responsible for maintaining the restaurant. The restaurant authorities replied naming the manager. "After receiving the letter, police arrested Anand on Sunday evening. He was later released on bail," a senior police officer said.
"Aggarwal told the police that before opening the jewellery showroom in March 2013, he was assured by Anand that the water leakage problem will be looked after," a police officer said.
The manager said that he would get the pipes changed immediately. However, the manager did nothing for months and the water leakage problem persisted.
"The showroom was closed for two days during Holi festival and on March 28. When I returned, I saw water flowing out of the shutter of the entrance gate. I pulled up the shutter and found water dripping from the ceiling fan, air conditioner and all other electrical appliances, including the CCTV camera," the complainant told the police.
