Masked men shoot gym trainer to settle scores

Staff Reporter

A 21-year-old youth from North-East was shot at by two masked men on a bike on Friday morning. The victim, Ricky Ranjit Sahni — a fitness trainer at a gym in Saket — is alive but critical and admitted to Max Hospital in Saket.

Police said Ricky is a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) professional and had taken part in various national and international events. Sahni is trained in Muay Thai, kickboxing and Wushu and has taken part in various MMA events in India and overseas. The sequence of events is not clear but witnesses say the bikers waylaid Ricky near Barapullah flyover around 8 am and the man riding pillion whipped out a pistol and shot twice. The first bullet missed Ricky as he ducked to save himself but the second hit him in the thigh.

As Ricky fell down and lay in a pool of blood, the bikers fled the spot. Nobody could note down the number of the bike as the registration plate had been covered. The motive of the attack is not clear yet but the cops said prima facie it did not seem like a racial attack. A source said that Ricky’s 49-year-old choreographer mother from Manipur, laimayum Khulna Sahni, had caught a snatcher a few weeks ago after putting up a brave fight. The incident had taken place in East Delhi. That gang is suspected to be behind the attack.

The Nizamuddin Police has roped in East district police for investigation. A senior police officer said that a case under Sections of Arms Act and attempt to murder vide Section 307 of IPC has been filed at Sunlight Colony police station. The CCTV footages of the area and call records are being scanned to get clues about the shooters.

DCP South-East P Karunakaran has formed a special team led by inspector Ved Prakash and others to crack the case. Ricky’s family (his father Avtar Singh is a Punjabi) has been given police protection. A breakthrough is soon expected.
