An alert driver of Delhi Metro saved the life of a 50-year-old Delhi Police head constable who attempted to end his life by flinging himself headlong into an oncoming train at Qutub Minar Metro station at 7.45 am. The driver had the sobriety to slam the emergency brake and stopped short of mowing Dayanand down. Delhi Police official said a case of attempt to suicide has been registered against the head constable, currently posted with New Delhi district police.
Dayanand sustained injuries to his head and extremities. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where doctors said he is in a critical state. Posted with Chanakyapuri police station for the last few years, Dayanand was on leave for the past six months. On Sunday, he left home at police colony in Malviya Nagar without intimating his family.
Cops surmised he might be a manic depressive. He stays with his wife and three sons at the colony for more than five years. His two sons run a coaching institute in Malviya Nagar while the third son is still studying. The family is being questioned and attempts are on to ascertain the cause behind the suicide attempt.
