A Sikh youth, who had allegedly tried to immolate himself at Northwest Delhi’s Shakurbasti railway station at around 6 pm, died on Saturday evening. Sources said his cries for help could not move the locals as they were reportedly seen making a video of the act for 15 minutes. And surprisingly, the incident trigerred tussle between the Railway police and the local police over jurisdiction over crime scene.
When one of the locals made a call to the police, a team from the Rani Bagh police station came as well as the Sarai Rohilla Railway police.
The man was seen immolating himself by a railway guard. Sources claimed that the two police teams fought for five hours over jurisidictional issue. Eventually, the Rani Bagh police station took charge of the body and started an Inquest Proceeding. Clarifying the matter, DCP Northwest Aslam Khan told The Pioneer, “The deceased has not been identified yet. It is apparently a case of suicide. We have started investigation under Inquest Proceedings,”
Talking about the incident, a senior police officer said the youth, as per the statement of the railway guard, came from Rohtak.
“At around 6:15 pm, the Sikh youth was seen setting himself ablaze. On hearing his cries, locals, along with the Government Railway police staff, gathered and started recording his act. For 15 minutes, they kept on making videos where he was heard screaming and shouting for help. It was only when he collapsed that one of the locals made a call to 100. Within a few minutes, personnel from Rani Bagh police station and Sarai Rohilla railway police station came,” said sources.
Aslam Khan said, “The deceased has not been identified yet. Since he was not carrying any belongings and only a oil tin was found from the spot, we have started inquest proceedings. The man suffered 100 per cent burn injuries.”
