A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly duping banks of Rs 22 lakh during the last six months, police said on Monday. The accused, Dinesh Kumar lal, used to withdraw money from a particular ATM of a bank’s branch in Rajouri Garden since there was a fault in the machine and had made 232 transactions in the last six months, police added.

Dinesh is an MBA from Sikkim Manipal University and is currently working in Securitrans India Private limited. He earlier worked with Brink Security. While working with these companies, the accused used to visit various ATMs for auditing and during such business trips he learned tricks of the trade.

While withdrawing money from the ATM, he waited till last moment to pick the money from cash dispenser. At the last moment, he used to pick money from cash dispenser and took care that the sensor of the ATM machine is blocked either by cards or currency note, said a senior police officer.

“The ATM machine, that was faulty, would be set to take the money back if someone failed to pick the cash from the dispenser within stipulated time. Due to blockage of the sensor, the ATM started reversing the procedure and transaction was mentioned as unsuccessful in the logbook,” he said.

Despite receiving money from the ATM, he used to lodge complaints in the banks alleging non receipt of amount. Subsequently, the amount was credited in the bank account of the accused.

He had opened more than 10 accounts in various banks and embezzled around Rs 22 lakh by making  approximately 232 such transactions within six months by using same modus operandi, said the officer.

Investigation was taken up in the case following a complaint from The Union Bank of India, Rajouri Garden alleging that on tallying the cash manually, the amount of cash remaining in the ATM machine was found less than that shown in the statements of the machine, said DCP (West) Vijay Kumar.

“The bank accounts in which the money was reverted despite the transactions taking place were scrutinised. They were found to be in the name of the accused and his relatives,” said the DCP. The accused was interrogated and was arrested on Sunday.
