Major reshuffle in Delhi Police

Pramod Kumar Singh

Alok Kumar Verma, a 1979 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) from the Arunachal, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT), has been posted back to the Delhi Police with immediate effect. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued an order to this effect on Thursday.

Verma is currently posted at Mizoram as Director General of Police (DGP). He is likely to take over the No. 2 —  Special City Commissioner (Administration)  — position in Delhi Police, which has been lying vacant after BS Bassi took over as the Delhi Police Commissioner. In a related development, Special Commissioner of Police and Vigilance P Kamraj has been transferred to Puducherry as DGP, while Ranvir Singh Krishnia of the 1989 batch, who was the Inspector General of Police in Puducherry, has been brought under the ambit of Delhi Police.

Verma’s posting to Delhi Police was in the pipeline after the post of Special CP (Administration) was vacated on August 1. Earlier, Verma had served as DCP (South), Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Special CP of Vigilance and Intelligence in the Delhi Police.

Joint CP (Crime) SBK Singh, Joint CP (Security) Muktesh Chander and Joint CP (Vigilance) Sundari Nanda from 1988 batch, are currently posted with the Delhi Police, while Balajee Srivastva and Arvind Deep from the same batch are serving as IGPs of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Arunachal Pradesh respectively.

P Kamraj, the 1987 batch IPS officer currently Special CP (Vigilance) has been sent to Puducherry as police chief. Kamraj had returned to Delhi Police in late 2011 after completing mandatory hard posting for AGMUT officers. However, the MHA issued an order to appoint Kamraj as the DGP of this Union Territory and transferred Krishnia to Delhi.

More transfers are expected in Delhi Police after the MHA takes up the issue of promotion of the 1988 batch IPS officers as Special Commissioners of Police in the next few days. There is vacancy in the Delhi Police at the rank of Special CPs of Security, Armed Police, Vigilance and Training.

Interestingly, the post of DG of Home Guards and Civil Defence is lying vacant after the superannuation of Dr Aditya Arya on August 31 last. Talks of KK Maheshwari, the DGP of Arunachal Pradesh, returning to Delhi as the new DG of Home Guards and Civil Defence are on. In that case, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram will need new DGPs and it should be noted as to who from the AGMUT cadre is sent to these important States, sharing their borders with China.

The MHA has discontinued the appointment of local IPS officers as the head of State police forces in Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. Hence, officers from AGMUT cadre will be sent to these two States. Sources said that it will be an interesting battle among eligible IPS officers to stick it out in Delhi.
