With thousands of homebuyers showing interest in residential flats in Narela, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday directed Government agencies to ensure that housing development in the sub-city is matched by adequate water supply, sanitation, transport connectivity and security.
During a visit to Narela to review infrastructure projects, Sandhu inspected ready-to-move-in flats developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and took stock of services being provided by different agencies. He said people purchasing homes in the area must not be left without essential civic facilities and warned that any delay or negligence in providing services would not be tolerated.
The LG specifically asked the DDA to provide built-up spaces to Delhi Police so that police stations, police posts and beat facilities could become operational at the earliest. He said a stronger police presence was necessary to address criminal and drug-related activities, improve surveillance and make residents feel safer.
The inspection covered DDA’s ready-to-move-in flats in Pocket 11 of Sectors A1-A4. Sandhu said the strong response to the authority’s housing schemes, reflected in the rapid sale of flats, had increased the responsibility of agencies to ensure that residents received the facilities they needed.
He also reviewed the supporting infrastructure being developed by various departments. Delhi Police’s security arrangements, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s sanitation services, the Delhi Jal Board’s water supply and sewerage work, and the Transport Department’s efforts to improve Delhi Transport Corporation connectivity were among the issues discussed.
Sandhu said housing projects could not be viewed in isolation from the neighbourhood facilities required by residents. Public spaces must be maintained, basic services provided and adequate security arrangements put in place alongside residential development.
He appreciated the DDA’s efforts to make housing more affordable through schemes offering discounts on flats in Narela. The authority has also witnessed strong demand for its Shramjeevi and Karmajeevi Awas Yojana schemes, with flats being booked within hours of registration opening, according to the note. The LG said he would continue to monitor the development of infrastructure and public services in the area to ensure that residents did not face difficulties after moving into their homes.
During the visit, Sandhu also inspected land allotted to State universities in Sectors G7 and G8 for a proposed integrated Education Hub. Spread across 138 hectares, the project is envisaged under the Master Plan for Delhi 2047 and is planned to accommodate higher education, research, innovation, vocational training and employment-related activities. He asked officials to speed up development so that Narela could emerge as an important educational destination.
The LG also reviewed preparations in Sector 8B of Zone P-II, which has become the first sector to achieve 70 per cent contiguous pooled land under the Land Pooling Policy. He said development under the policy could support planned and sustainable urban expansion and strengthen Narela’s role in the capital’s future growth.
The review brought together housing, civic infrastructure, public safety and educational development as key components of the DDA’s plans for the sub-city. Sandhu said coordinated efforts by Government agencies would be essential to ensure that Narela developed as a well-planned residential and institutional centre.
