late night drunken cruise turns fatal

Staff Reporter

A 22-year-old man lost his life for sticking his neck out (and literally so) of a car while on a late night cruise with three friends in Delhi’s Mandir Marg area. His friends reportedly panicked and abandoned the sedan near Garwhal Bhavan in Jhandewalan, leaving Aashu to bleed to death.

According to police, the incident took place around 1.30 am on Thursday. Shiv Shankar, 26, Firoz, 25, Brijesh Kumar, 26, and Aashu - all residents of Salaam Baalak Trust Orphanage — had reportedly consumed liquor at a friend’s place late on Wednesday night before heading out on a long drive.

“Once they reached Simon Bolivar Marg, Shiv, who was behind the wheel, rammed the car into a tree. Aashu, in the rear seat, had his neck stuck out of the car window when the accident took place,” said SBS Tyagi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi district). A PCR call was received around 4.50 am. Firoz and Brijesh have been arrested. Shiv is absconding and reportedly fled to Goa.

“Shiv, as the owner of the car, hadn’t had the car papers transferred to his name. Abandoning the car at the scene of the crime seemed a convenient way of getting away scot-free,” said a police official. A case of homicide has been registered at Mandir Marg police station.
