A juvenile and his friend were detained on Monday for their involvement in a gang-rape and murder of a 25-year-old girl of Bhalswa Dairy area in Outer Delhi.

The incident that had taken place on Saturday night in Mukandpur area has left investigators stumped that the duo allegedly sexually assaulted the woman even after she was dead.

A protest by girl’s parents and relatives was held at Mukundpur Chowk demanding exemplary punishment.

The two accused — both neighbours of the deceased — were identified as 17-year-old boy and his 22-year-old accomplice Anhimanyu.

“In the initial phase of the investigation, we had zeroed in on the juvenile, but he allegedly managed to mislead us, delaying the probe. It was only after Manu’s detention that the juvenile disclosed everything,” said DCP (North West) Vijay Singh.

The mini-truck used in the crime and the woman’s mobile phone have been recovered, police said.

During interrogation, the accused told police that they went to the woman’s residence and gained access to the premises by scaling the wall of the adjacent terrace. They found the girl sleeping and allegedly raped her. The woman suddenly woke up and resisted the assault, for which one of the accused allegedly strangled her to death. Once they realised that the woman was dead, they lifted her up and put her in the mini-truck in which they had come. They drove to a forested area around 2-km from the woman’s residence and dumped the body there. The duo again sexually assaulted the body there and fled from the spot.

On that day the girl’s parents had gone to their

native village in Uttar Pradesh, said police.

The woman’s parents started calling her up in the morning and when she did not take the calls, they asked neighbours to check, said police. Even when the neighbours could not trace her, they informed her relatives in Delhi, said a senior police official. later, a missing complaint was registered, said police.

It was in the evening that some locals found her semi-naked body and raised an alarm. In the initial phase of the investigation, the police had zeroed in on the juvenile, but he allegedly managed to mislead cops, delaying the probe. The mini-truck used in the crime and the woman’s mobile phone have been recovered, police said.

The juvenile works in a mobile repair shop while the second accused Abhimanyu is employed as a loader in Azadpur fruit market. While Abhimanyu has been arrested on the charges of rape and murder, his juvenile accomplice has been detained. Police officials said they will get his ossification (age-determination test) done to ascertain his age since he has committed a heinous crime.
