Jung clams up on Delhi's kismet

Staff Reporter

A day after the Delhi BJP exuded confidence to face fresh elections in the national Capital in the wake of the party’s sterling performance in Haryana and Maharashtra, lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung on Monday remained tightlipped over the future political course in the city.

“I would not like to make a comment on the political scenario at this moment,” Jung told reporters at Delhi Police headquarters, where he launched an anti-corruption advertisement campaign of Delhi Police.

Buoyed by the party’s victory in Maharashtra and Haryana, Delhi BJP had earlier stated it would push for fresh election in the national Capital, banking on the ‘Modi wave’ to wrest power, and may turn down any offer to form the Government.

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh lovely and AAP leaders have already made it clear that they are in favour of fresh elections in Delhi. Interestingly, Delhi Congress MlAs are not in favour of fresh elections. AAP too had dared BJP to call elections in the city. AAP has been very steadfast in its demands for dissolution of the State Assembly and wanted fresh elections.

Earlier, talking about the campaign, Jung said that it would prove as an important step towards preventing corruption and urged people to stop giving bribes. A series of advertisements were launched by Delhi Police urging people to report any kind of corruption related to the police on the helpline 1064 and WhatsApp helpline 9910641064 where people can send audio-visual evidence as well.

Delhi Police has often been accused of taking illegal gratification for allowing illegal construction. Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi had issued a terse circular asking the rank and file of the force to desist from visiting construction sites.

Bassi also made it clear that the force does not have any power to stop unauthorised construction until they have orders from the municipal authority. He said people should report if policemen demand bribe to allow illegal construction. In the past, there have been reports of police officials allegedly taking bribe to allow illegal construction.

“A policeman can only report the incident to the civic body and does not have any power to stop unauthorised construction himself. If the matter comes up at any later stage, he will not just face a departmental enquiry, but may also go to jail. We want people to report to us if somebody demands money,” Bassi said.
