At a time when Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration is facing wrath of JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) over revised mess charges and compulsory attendance row, university administrators, including Vice-Chancellor, are also grappling with all sorts of “rumours” making rounds on various social media platforms and have to face the ‘derogatory’ and ‘abusive’ comments from trolls.
As a result, JNU officials have to remain alert and they are quite active on social media countering or refuting the “misleading” messages that may instigate or polarise students against administration. The murky scenario on social media platforms is reflected as no sooner does JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar or any other official tweet something about university affairs or about any policy, allegedly dedicated “army of trolls” start a series of ‘abusive tweets’, ‘filthy messages’ and derogatory comments on their official twitter handles.
On Monday, when the JNU V-C tweeted a report by The Pioneer which was about the appeal made by JNU administration to the students to not to block the entry and exit of centre’s, trolls get back to their ‘favourite’ job. From a twitter handle named Sajjad Hasan @SajjadH63884518 a reply to V-C’s tweet reads as follows: “You are a fox, and we don’t believe you. A characterless man, always running for some positions. Kursi Kumar. Now you try your best, you will be rewarded by the Government.”
Interestingly, these trolls who are allegedly aligned towards different ideologies are often indulged in argument among themselves. A twitter account named as Sanatan Dharmi @820luffy replied to the V-C and other accounts saying: “So whatIJ These jholachaap JNU students are ought to read not to create ruckus. Padhna h to padho nahi to dafa ho.”
On Monday, Finance Officer of JNU, Heeraman Tiwari took to twitter to post a message for JNU student
community in which he termed as “baseless” the message spread on social media “about new rule in the revised fellowship form for JNU students regarding direct deduction of dues of students by JNU”.
In the message to student community the FO said, “A message has been spread on social media that a new fellowship / scholarship form has incorporated a change i.e. linking mess dues with fellowship/scholarship and saying that the mess dues will be directly deducted from the fellowship/scholarship. Actually, the provision has already been on the fellowship/ scholarship form and there is no alteration of this condition.”
In the fellowship/scholarship form the students certify that he or she is not in receipt of any scholarship/fellowship from any other source. He or she also authorizes the FO, JNU to deduct the amount, if any, payable towards the university /mess dues from the fellowship amount. JNU informed that students can continue to use the old fellowship/scholarship form to claim their fellowship until 30 June 2018. While fellowship/scholarship holders are required to fill up the new claim form to claim their scholarship from 1 July onwards.
