Taking a tough stand in the face of continued incidents of crime against women, Jawaharlal Nehru University has suspended a student for 10 years for allegedly asking ‘sexual favours’ and attacking a first year student of School of languages.

“Abhinendra (24), was trying to get into a post graduation course, but we have suspended him for ten years and he will not be able to take admission in any course. The campus is out of bounds for him and he will not be allowed inside under any circumstances,” said Poonam Kudesia, JNU spokesperson.

The action comes a day after the girl, who stayed at Shipra hostel, complained to the police that Abhinendra attacked her outside Shipra hostel as she refused to respond to his advances. “Any student who is found helping the accused in any way will face disciplinary action against him or her,” said Kudesia.

According to police complaint filed at Vasant Kunj (north) police station, the victim made a PCR call around 8:30pm and informed them about the incident. Abhinendra has recently completed his graduation from School of languages in Spanish and was in touch with the victim for sometime. “She had met her several times before as he helped her in the course as well,” said a senior police official.

However, this time Abhinedra came to meet her asked for ‘sexual favors’ which irritated the victim and she tried to push him away. “Abhinendra held her hand and slapped her in an attack,” said a senior police official. She immediately reported the incident to Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment, who advised her to inform police.

Police registered FIR against the accused under sections 354 and 506 of IPC and arrested the accused immediately. Abhinendra, hails from Eastern UP and was produced before the court on Monday afternoon. He is a regular visitor to the campus and was seen with the victim several times.
