Ugly scenes were witnessed inside the campus of  Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday when a group of agitating students blocked an ambulance and stopped doctors from meeting an ailing professor on the campus, following which authorities threatened to take "severe action" against them.

JNU Vice Chancellor (VC) Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar  in a series of tweet said a group of students allegedly blocked the main gate of administrative building and stopped an ambulance and doctors from meeting an ailing professor on campus.

Following the incidents and behaviour of students, the university authorities threatened to take "severe action."

"Today the Inter Hostel Administration (IHA) meeting was scheduled to be held at 10 am in the convention centre of JNU. However, some students who are not members of IHA committee disrupted the meeting by forcibly entering the venue," JNU VC tweeted.

"The committee members requested the agitating students to go out and let the meeting continue. However, due to their unruly behaviour and sloganeering, the Dean of Students Prof. Umesh Kadam fell sick with high blood pressure. This is highly condemnable and is unbecoming of students. Dean of Students (DoS), Professor Umesh Kadam is still at health centre of JNU held hostage by students and they are not letting him to go to Spinal Injuries centre for further investigation," said Professor Jagdesh Kumar in series of tweets.

"The Dean, his wife and their small kid are inside the health center of JNU. Dean of students needs to be shifted to a hospital outside JNU. However, they are not letting him to be taken to an outside hospital for further check up," JNU VC said another tweet.

While, the University Registrar, Pramod Kumar alleged that the students did not even allow the university doctors to check on Kadam.

The registrar said, "The situation of Professor Kadam was getting worse; even his wife and two children were seeking relief from the students. After a lot of effort, when the DoS was finally shifted into an ambulance, the students again surrounded the ambulance and did not let the vehicle move towards the hospital, he alleged.

"Kadam's wife was pleading students and asking the university security to shift him to a fully equipped hospital outside the campus, but these unruly students did not move," the JNU registrar claimed.

"They surrounded the ambulance and forced it to be taken to the University Health Centre, rather than to the hospital as suggested by the doctor. Kadam is being confined now in a doctor's office and the students have surrounded the Health Centre," he said.

However, the JNU Student Union (JNUSU) did not react to the University Authorities allegations that they were not allowing an ailing Dean of Students Welfare from being taken to the hospital. Delhi Police officers too feigned ignorance, since they did not get any call for help from the JNU administration.
