Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday underwent a planned diabetes management surgery at Max Hospital Saket and is recovering well. 61-year-old Jaitley was admitted to the hospital last evening after which an elective laparoscopic procedure was carried out on him.

According to a statement issued by the hospital late evening, “Arun Jaitley, Union Minister, underwent a planned elective laparoscopic procedure for diabetes management under Dr Pradeep K Chowbey at the Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, on Tuesday. The procedure has been performed successfully.”

Jaitley has been a diabetic for last few years and thus, Dr Chowbey informed, his surgery was a planned one. “He was admitted at around 6 pm on Monday. The surgery is done when someone has an uncontrolled diabetic situation,” said the doctor. Explaining the exact procedure of the surgery, Dr Chowbey added, “In this procedure we staple the stomach and make a small pouch of stomach and connect it to the intestine. Thus the food from the small pouch goes to the intestine directly. All this is done endoscopically and laparoscopically,” he said.

Jaitley is expected to be discharged in a day or two, said hospital authorities. Jaitley went through a series of routine blood and cardiac investigations before the surgery.
