A man threw acid at his 32-year-old wife after an argument in East Delhi’s Mandawali area. The attacker’s 18-year-old niece was also injured in the incident.

The victims have been identified as Bimla and her niece Rani (18), who live in Mandawali with Bimla’s husband Devender and their three children. “The incident occurred on Monday night when the accused Devender (38), a factory worker, threw acid at his wife Suman. He is absconding,” a senior police officer said. Suman was hospitalised with 28 per cent burns while Devender’s niece was reported to be out of danger.

Based on the victim’s statement, a case was registered under Section 326-A (causing grievous hurt by throwing acid) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Devender at Mandawali Police Station in East Delhi. “Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple had a similar argument in the evening over the same issue after which Devender left. Around 8.15 pm, he returned home inebriated and was carrying a bottle of acid. When Bimla found Devender drunk, she started reprimanding him. This made Devender angry and in a fit of rage, he threw acid at her,” the officer added.
