The Economics Offences Wing (EOW) of the Gurugram police are being imparted English classes as  most of the complaints recceived in English were not understood by the EOW personnels.

As per the data available with EOW, around 103 complaints related to property fraud were pending for the last three years because the staff at the cell were not able to deal with complaints written in English due to their inability to understand English. Officials said majority of  complaints by the victims were in English, hence the problem. “In order to break this logjam, it was decided that police ppersonnel posted with the EOW will be trained in improving their skills in English”, said a top cop.

However, after 40 days of special English tutorial classes imparted by professionals, around 41 complaints out of 103 have been resolved in the span of five months by the sleuths. Now it has been decided to make its staff of over 21 cops proficient in written and spoken English.

The team has also fixed an aim that the pending challans of the complaints will be filed before the court within six months of period.

“Those selected for the  crash course in English were enrolled for 40 days. They were imparted training for two hours daily for those speaking in Hindi were fined a just Rs 1. The wing has accumulated Rs  700 as fine till now,” said Vijay Kumar, In-charge EOW cell.

All police personnel deputed with the EOW are graduates but barring one or two, none are proficient in English. “Most of the complaints in the unit used to file by the corporate executive and foreign nationals, who do not know Hindi, and submit complaints in English. Sometimes cops at the cell could not understand English words which causes pendency of the cases and also leads to misreporting of facts,” Kumar, said.

He further said the personnel have been instructed to communicate with one another in english. An half-an-hour break is being provided to cops to read English newspapers, books and magazines to improve their soft skills.

“The personnel including experts have been connected with each other via WhatsApp. The professional uploaded English tutorial videos in the group. Police personnel made their own video of spoken english uploaded in the group as  homework. Thereafter the professionals checked their homework and pointed out their mistakes,” the in-charge, said.

“Improving your skills is important to come up with better results.  Police personnel other units are willing to join EOW cell to improve their soft skills and prove themselves. It is a new initiative to redress complaints and it will surely improve work efficacy, he said.

“The training, aimed at officers from constable to inspectors, will be provided in a phased manner. Classes on improving communication skills, front office management, attending phone calls, handling of victims will be arranged. The training sessions must be introduced at regular intervals for the force,” Kumar mentioned.
