Hit and run: Auto driver killed by speeding truck

Staff Reporter

In yet another case of hit and run, a 45-year-old auto driver was killed by a speeding truck in West Delhi's Punjabi Bagh area on Sunday night. Police said that by looking at the condition of the body of the deceased, it seems that the driver was flung out of the auto and hit by the truck. Since the accident took place outside the main road of the Maharaja Agrasen hospital, the body of the man lying on the road was crushed by passing vehicles. Ironically, the hit and run took place barely 300 meters away from the Punjabi Bagh police station.

A senior police officer said that the deceased has been identified as Vinod Kumar. “Since the body of the auto driver was found with multiple injuries, we could not identify him. It was only when we checked his auto that we found the driving license and informed his family members.”

Vinod, police said, used to live at Pul Prahladpur area. On Sunday night, he was heading from Peeragarhi towards Zakhira when the accident took place.

Despite the close proximity of the police station, the police officer said that they were not aware about the accident. “We were informed about a man and a damaged auto lying on the Maharaja Agrasen hospital road by a passer-by on Monday morning,” said the officer. We are yet to establish when the accident took place.

However, as per the CCTV cameras installed near the hospital, we found out that there was an accident. A speeding truck rammed into the auto. The accident was so severe that the truck tugged the auto for 30 meters. Due to the impact of the collision between the auto and the truck, the auto driver fell down and was then hit by the truck driver.

We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence under relevant sections of the law.
