Heavy showers water down Capital's heat

SR

A smart cloudburst on Saturday brought the much-needed let-up to Delhiites from the muggy weather plaguing them of late. The Capital had been reeling under oppressive heat lately. Inclement rains brought the mercury down.

A senior official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Delhi might receive light rain and thunderstorms on Sunday as well.

“At Safdarjung, 22 mm rain was recorded. On Sunday, the maximum temperature is likely to remain around 33°C and the minimum may remain at 26°C. Cloudy sky with rain and thundershowers on Saturday was due to a western disturbance since a trough in the midtropospheric Westerlies over Jammu and Kashmir and its neighbouring region persisted,” IMD

official said.

Friday’s maximum temperature hovered around 34.1°C — average for this time of the year — while the minimum temperature was a notch above average at 25.2°C.

Heavy rain was reported from various parts of the city, including Safdarjung, Palam, lodhi Road and Ayanagar. With rains also came the perennial problem of waterlogging and traffic gridlock. Traffic was moving

at a snail’s pace on Tughlakabad Road over bridge,

Dhaula Kuan, ITO and Aurobindo Marg.

It was drizzling since morning in several parts of the city, but it was only in the afternoon that the rains picked up pace. People were surprised with the sudden change in weather. “We are hoping for another drencher on Sunday as well,” said Sahil Garg,

an executive at an

automobile major.
