Head Constable (HC) Amit Tomar, the controversial blue-eyed boy who enjoyed a 10-year long uninterrupted stint with the Crime Branch of Delhi Police is pleading amnesia. He is not replying to questions posed by the investigating officer (IO).
HC Tomar has been sent to three-day police remand to the Anti-Robbery Cell of Crime Branch. HC Tomar and sub-inspector Nagender Tomar are the prime accused in the infamous shootout and extortion case. They fired at a Crime Branch team that had gone to investigate a case of extortion. In a related development, Joy Tirkey, Additional DCP-II of South East district, is likely to be called for questioning as it was he who had requisitioned the services of HC Tomar and posted him with the special team of South East district. Meanwhile, sources said that the process to dismiss HC Tomar from service has been initiated and he will have to face the music soon.
“Investigators are now planning to approach Tirkey for questioning and also to confront him with the accused Tomar,” police sources added.
Investigators are currently probing the case of extortion about the kidnapping of one Sanjay Kumar Thakur, a Jaitpur-based travel agent. It is alleged that Tomar was extorting money from him. “On being questioned why he kidnapped the travel agent, he denied that he kidnapped any travel agent and also claimed that he did not fire on the Crime Branch team as he was not present at the scene,” police sources said.
While the accused SI Nagender had admitted in his disclosure statement that he along HC Tomar and another Constable Kaushal, who is still absconding, had kidnapped the complainant Thakur from his residence and had demanded money from his father. It has been now revealed that HC Tomar was spearheading an extortion racket and had extorted money from people by threatening them to implicate them in false cases and on trumped up charges. During interrogation, Tomar revealed facts that the call detail records (CDR) unit of South East district was run by him from his office at Nehru Place police post.
He was posted with the special investigation team (SIT) of Crime Branch in Rohini, but after the transfer of Tirkey, he was called to the South East district and then posted with the specially constituted team under Additional DCP Tirkey.
