HC to hear plea to ban matches today

The Delhi High Court is likely to hear a PIl seeking a ban on Indian Premiere league (IPl) till a corrective measure is adopted on Wednesday.

In the wake of the recent expose on spot fixing in the IPl, a Public Interest litigation was filed in the High Court demanding a ban on remaining IPl matches till concrete steps were taken to curb alleged corrupt practices.

The petition, filed by Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, president of Association for Social and Humanitarian Affairs, demanded that cricket be taken under direct control by the Central Government, revoking the authority of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

A division bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath adjourned the petition for Wednesday after Additional Solicitor General Rajeev Mehra, appearing for the Sports Ministry, told the court that a similar petition was listed for hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The apex court, while dismissing the similar separate petition said, "High Court is independent of hearing matters." "Circumstances have led to loss of faith in BCCI and that the 'strategic time-out' is being used and exploited to fix sessions in between matches. Microphone conversations between players and commentators should be banned too as it could be a source of illegally fixing matches," the PIl said.
