NEW DELHI: A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student allegedly attacked a fellow student with a meat cleaver over his friendship with a female student, leaving him severely injured and causing him to lose vision in one eye.

The incident took place around 3 pm on Thursday, November 5, in Room 119 of the Barak Hostel on the JNU campus. The victim, identified as Saurabh, is a second-year language student. He sustained injuries to his face, head and eyes and was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. According to officials, he lost vision in his right eye following the attack.

The accused, identified as Ajay, is pursuing an MA at the university. Officials said the alleged attack stemmed from his objection to Saurabh's friendship with a female student. Four students, including the victim and the accused, sustained injuries during the incident.

Eyewitnesses said blood was visible from the first floor to the ground floor of the hostel, triggering panic among students.

Following the incident, Saurabh's female friend approached the police and lodged a complaint. Based on her complaint, Vasant Kunj North police station registered a case. No arrest had been made until Saturday evening, and the investigation was underway, police said.

Meanwhile, the university rusticated all four students involved in the incident under Sections 32(1) and 32(3) of the JNU Act, 1966, according to an order issued by the Proctor's Office.

The university also warned that students found sheltering the rusticated individuals on campus would face disciplinary action.

In a statement, JNU said it had established institutional mechanisms for addressing student grievances and maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards violence.
