Taking suo motu cognisance of the shocking medical negligence case at Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) on Thursday issued a notice to the doctors who had operated the wrong leg of a patient. On Monday, 24-year-old Ravi Rai, a resident of Ashok Vihar, fell from the stairs on Sunday, following which he was taken to Fortis hospital at Shalimar Bagh, where doctors inserted two iron rods in the left leg which was completely healthy.

“A team of DMC officials will visit the Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh on Friday. They will investigate the case and ask the hospital authorities to submit all the necessary documents of preliminary inquiry committee formed by the hospital to DMC as early as possible,” Dr Girish Tyagi, Registrar DMC told The Pioneer.

It may be noted that Fortis Hospital on Tuesday said in a Press statement that they have sacked the erring doctors and team of Operation Room (OR) personnel involved in the operation. “We immediately set up an Expert Committee to enquire into the matter. Their preliminary view suggests that in the rarest of aberrations, the operating team may have disregarded and sidestepped due processes. We take our obligation to our patients very seriously.”

“While Fortis Hospital has sacked the doctors responsible for medical faults in the reported incident, DMC does not rely on the fact-finding committee of any hospital. Therefore, we investigate the case by reviewing doctors’ profile, medical ethics, treatment procedure and following which action is taken against the doctors,” said the DMC official.

As of now, patient is undergoing his further healthcare treatment at Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, wherein he is under the observation of the orthopaedician.

On Tuesday, Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, said, “The patient came to us suffering from a calcaneal fracture in his right leg and unfortunately he was operated on his left leg at another private hospital, as per our preliminary assessment and feedback given by the patient’s attendant. On arrival at the hospital, the patient was immediately taken in for treatment for his right leg.”
