A former Delhi legislator from Najafgarh Assembly seat Bharat Singh, alias Bharte, was shot dead while his two gunmen Ramjeevan and Baljeet were critically injured by a group of 10 men at South-West Delhi’s Najafgarh area on Sunday evening. Police said Singh had received three bullet wounds. Eyewitnesses told police that the former MlA was shot in the head. His gunmen Ramjeevan sustained bullet injury to his shoulder while Baljeet was shot in the leg.
The attack took place at around 8 pm during a function at Avantika Vatika in Najafgarh area. Police said the attackers came in three cars and barged into the function, brandishing their guns. An eyewitness told police that the attackers opened fire on Singh and his securitymen and then escaped unchallenged. Singh, who is the younger brother of gangster Kishen Pehalwan, had received three bullets that were fired from close range. He and the securitymen were rushed to Medanta in Gurgaon where Singh succumbed to his bullet injuries.
Bharat Singh was attacked in 2012 in his office following a gang war. He had survived the murderous attempt and the incident had created uproar about the security of legislators. The then CM Sheila Dikshit took up the issue with the Centre and Delhi Police. Sources in Delhi Police said Bharat faced threat to his life. A homicide has been registered and the case is being investigated. Sources said Singh had a dispute over property with someone. “It might be the outcome of a property dispute but we are investigating all angles,” said a police officer.
