Country’s first technical university exclusively for women — Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women — will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Kashmere Gate on Thursday.

This would not only boost their participation in the field of science and technology, but also provide 100 per cent placement in multi-national companies like Oracle, Adobe, Microsoft, Maruti Suzuki, TCS, GE Research and Samsung. Total 85 per cent seats would be reserved for Delhi girls, while 15 per cent seats for outstation students.

According to sources, Delhi will become the first State to have an exclusive technological university for women."The university will provide undergraduate and post graduate courses in Btech in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronic, Communication Engineering, Mechanical, Automation Engineering, Information Technology. While it provides MTech courses in Mobile Computing, Robotics, Automation, and Information Security. The campus of this university will be in Kashmere Gate," said a source.

The university will also facilitate additional enrolment of women in technological courses as parents are often reluctant to send their daughters outside Delhi for higher education. It is expected that the student strength will increase to almost two times the current strength in next few years.

To establish the university, the Cabinet had given its approval last year to the draft of the Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University Bill, which was introduced in the Assembly in 2012. The Bill proposed to be a non-affiliating university, aimed at ensuring an environment for excellence in engineering education and ensure active participation of women in engineering, science and technology.
