A fire broke out in operation theatre of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Trauma Centre in Delhi on Sunday. Authorities were quick to respond and shifted patients in other wards after detecting fire. At least 24 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and controlled  the blaze in time. However, no one was injured in the incident.

A call was received at 6.13 pm about the incident, following which 24 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, Chief Fire Officer Atul Garg said, adding that the fire broke out on the ground floor of the AIIMS Trauma Centre, he said.

Hospital sources said patients had to be shifted to another ward and others were evacuated since the smoke engulfed the ground floor of the building. “There were no patients in the operation theatre when the fire was first detected. The hospital authorities quickly moved out all of them and shifted to ‘Intensive Care Unit’ (ICU),” he said.

The electricity supply was stopped in the building soon after the incident and short circuit is said to be the reason behind the incident, they said.

Earlier in February this year, 19 people charred to death at a hotel in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area. A woman and a child had died after they jumped from the fifth floor of the building in order to save themselves.

Following the incident, AIIMS has instituted an inquiry into the matter to identify the cause of fire and to suggest measures to avoid such incident in future.
