A minor fire broke out in the lawyers’ chamber block in the Supreme Court premises on Sunday afternoon. The fire, which broke out in the RK Jain lawyers’ chamber block, had been brought under control and no casualty was reported in the incident.
Fire brigade officials said that a call was received around 12.50 pm and one dozen fire tenders immediately reached the spot. It took 30 minutes to control the fire. The incident took place when the new Chief Justice of India RM lodha was addressing media persons in the building which is over 50 years old.“We got the call and rushed the spot immediately and brought the blaze under control. As we swung into action immediately, we stopped spreading the fire to other chambers that caused little loss of documents. It appears that the fire took place due to short circuit in the chambers but we are investigating the incident from other angles too,” said the official.
“I have chamber no. 134. I was attending the party of our new Chief Justice. When I came back, I saw my chamber on fire. People here did not know how to operate a fire extinguisher. A short circuit is a distant probability,” PH Parekh, a lawyer, said while talking to the media.
