One person was killed and 10 others critically injured in a road accident on Yamuna Expressway on Sunday. Police said the accident took place when a speeding SUV rear-ended a stationary truck.

The victims were admitted to the ICU of a hospital where one succumbed to his injuries while the condition of four is stated to be critical. Police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination.

According to police, the incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday about 800 metres away from the zero point (entry/exit point of the E-way) on Greater Noida-Agra side. The SUV of the victims, headed to Aligarh district, rammed into a truck. Police said that due to poor visibility, the driver of the car failed to spot the stationary truck and rear-ended it.

Passersby informed police and a rescue team admitted all the victims to Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida where Imran (32) succumbed to his injuries while others — Gufran (26), Furkhan (36), Sava (30), Ujama (23), Anam (16), Ayan (6), Aviva (20) and the two truckers — are stated to be out of danger.

“Around 10 injured people were brought to Kailash Hospital by the Yamuna Expressway ambulance team. One was declared dead and he has been identified as Imran. He is around 32 years old,” said a hospital doctor. “Four of the injured were admitted to ICU while three others were admitted in a ward,” he said.

Police said that out of the injured persons, eight are from a same family from Karim Mohalla of Old Delhi. Imran, who died in the accident, had his own business. The family was headed to Aligarh to attend a marriage ceremony. The two injured were the occupants of the truck who have yet not been identified. “We have sent the body for a post-mortem exam and have informed the next of kin. We have not registered case as yet,” said a police official.
