SRISHTI GARG, Vardha Pal

Ministry of Environment and Forest is setting up a databank of Acts for better conservation of flora, fauna and rivers. This databank will also help the agencies in dealing with air pollution, especially in cities like Delhi, said Dr Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister for Environment and Forest, Science and Technology.

"We are making a databank of the environment-friendly Acts for people, conservation of rivers, flora and fauna and even legislations that can help improve the air quality," the Minister said on Wednesday while speaking during "Swasth Sarthi Abhiyan". The campaign was launched by Dr Harsh Vardhan and Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minster for Petroleum and Natural Gas. It is an initiative of Indraprasta Gas limited (IGl) in coordination with Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) and was supported by Delhi Police. A mega Health Camp was held on the occasion to provide basic preventive health care needs like BMI, Blood Pressure and vision.

Swasth Sarthi Abhiyan is a  two-month-long mega campaign focusing on providing preventive healthcare to the auto, taxi and bus drivers of the region, with almost all of them being users of CNG. Swasth Saarthi web application will enable the drivers to access their health records online from anywhere.

Blood test, sugar test, eye test with the help of doctors from St Stephen’s Hospital will also be conducted. The campaign would continue in form of health camps at various CNG stations of IGl till August 31, 2017.

"Around 80,000 auto, 2.5 lakh taxi and 2 lakh buses are plying in the Capital and contribute an annual Rs 3,000 crore to the IGl business. The new aim should be to increase business from Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 30,000 crore,” said Pradhan. He further added, "Whenever I have to consult a doctor, I schedule my visit one month in advance and I can imagine how difficult it must be for the daily wage drivers to respond to their physical problems. Most of the times they don't even know that their health is badly affected and needed physician's attention."

The event began with the speeches by all the members and was followed by a short film regarding the plight of the Saarthis. Free medical kits, T-shirts and caps were  also distributed among the Saarthies. A special workshop was organized by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) on fuel conservation and good driving habits as a part of  Saksham 2017 - the mass Oil and Gas Conservation Campaign and Nukkad Natak by the Black Pearl art on "women safety" was also performed.
