President Pranab Mukherjee, while conferring degrees at the 90th annual convocation of Delhi University on Tuesday, praised the university for its achievements and called it a premier higher education institute.

However, he stressed on the need for taking more steps to achieve an international level of education. Mukherjee congratulated the students and university for supporting the Indian education system with new and innovative ventures and said that though the nation was doing well in higher education - by producing more number of scholars every year - there was a lot to be done.

He pointed out the country’s growth was dependent on its education system. “Though our education sector has increased and more people are taking up higher education, there are numbers who still don’t. We have to make changes in education to attain national goals,” said the President.

Mukherjee added, “We must learn from other countries and try to adapt their education models. We have enough manpower compared to the US and China, but we should accommodate our talented minds in proper fields. To make education accessible to more people, efforts need to be taken in expanding our universities in remote areas.”

He emphasised the need for inclusive education with the help of the National Mission on Education through Information & Communication. According to the President, education through open and distance learning programmes, scholarships and training will help in achieving national goals.

Mukherjee said more seats should be available for aspiring researchers and more centres should be available for better research. “There are many innovators with creative minds who can help in the innovative building of the country. The university must promote interdisciplinary platform and mentor these budding minds,” he added.
