Delhi University’s idea to introduce ‘BTech in Forensic Science’ seems to have impressed most of the students as a surprising number of students have applied for the course this year. While offline data is yet to come, 35,067 students have applied for the course online. However, most of the applicants are not even sure if they will get to pursue the course since the Academic Council (AC) of the university is yet to approve it and assign colleges.
The course was introduced by the university short of the commencement of sale of forms. This last-minute decision didn’t leave them much time to hold a meeting with the AC. Thus, the subject was put in the central application form with an asterix and is still awaiting the approval.
The matter is likely to be decided in the AC meeting scheduled on Saturday. If the course does not get a go-ahead there, it can put the career of many students in jeopardy. However, university officials are confident that it will be approved. “The Academic Council will be taking a final decision during their meeting and there is no reason that the course would be rejected. The fact that so many students have applied for the course, has increased its chances,” said an official from the Dean Students Welfare office.
The university introduced the course with the intention of at least five to six colleges adapting it. However, so far only Khalsa College has put forward its interest in the course. “The list of colleges which will offer the course will also be declared on Saturday. Colleges have already sent in their inputs regarding the course,” added an official.
Meanwhile, English Honours has emerged as the most sought after course according to online application data with 71,359 applications. Following that are Mathematics with 67,636 applications, Chemistry with 64,951 and Computer Science with 60,963 applications. This trend shows that BTech and BSc courses are more popular with students than the regular courses.
