As levels of pollution are rising across the national Capital, students from Delhi University’s Maharaja Agrasen College (MAC) have taken to roads to create awareness of clean and healthy environment by promoting cycling on roads. The campaign called ‘Pedal Power’, which was started by the college earlier, is being revived with students, faculty as well as the principal of the college cycling around the campus.

“We are trying to attract more to take up cycling and give up using vehicles. It is our initiative solely based on creating awareness to save nature. The levels of pollution have gone drastically high and it’s important to change our approach in daily lives,” Vinay Kumar Rai, faculty from department of Journalism MAC told The Pioneer.

While the Delhi Government recently introduced car-free day to promote more environment-friendly lifestyle, the students here had taken the step through ‘Pedal Power’ campaign on the environment day in 2014.

The campaigners create awareness about the benefits of cycling while motivating others in the vicinity of the college to take up cycling.

In the pedal club, there are 10 teachers and 40 students actively involved at present. One of the college teachers, Dr Sudhir, was the first to come on cycle with some students from his home in Mayur Vihar. later, other students joined them and thus formed the Pedal Power. “Encouraged by this kind of initiative by a group led to the awareness in the college and the college bought 25 cycles,” said a faculty member.
