The Delhi University on Thursday suspended Professor GN Saibaba after a recommendation for the same was sent by the Governing Body of the Ram lal Anand College late on Wednesday evening. This comes in lieu of Saibaba’s arrest on May 9 by the Gadchiroli police which was followed by his detention at the Nagpur Central Jail over his alleged Naxal links.

According to university officials, “the Governing body of Ram lal Anand College submitted a recommendation to the Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh on Wednesday after they called for an emergent meeting late evening. The decision to suspend him came as a result of his long detention by the police. The V-C issued the order of suspension on Thursday morning after going through all the details.”

Saibaba’s wife, AS Vasantha, on Wednesday had told the press that the university wants to suspend her husband and would soon ask her to vacate their staff quarters as well. However, while the suspension order has been passed, no information regarding the vacation of the quarter has come to the forefront. University officials said that no such orders have been passed so far.Meanwhile, student body Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a protest on Thursday morning demanding the suspension of Saibaba on grounds that “he had been spreading Maoist ideologies among students for a long time. Such elements are a threat to the culture of Delhi University,” said a student from ABVP.
