DU library's online journals to be accessible from anywhere

ABHINAV SINGH

In the backdrop of the fact that online journals of Delhi University can be read or accessed from within the university only, the DU library is now planning to make available the huge databank of its online journals accessible from across the world.

This would be done by switching over from Internet Protocol (IP) based system to ID based system. Under the later system, each member would be provided with a unique login ID and a password, through which he or she can login to Delhi University library System (DUlS) from abroad or even while sitting at one’s home.

This initiative is taken by Dr Dharam Veer Singh, University librarian, Head DUlS, keeping in view the inconvenience faced by the research scholars, faculty members and other students who need to refer DU journals while on academic trip abroad or within the country.

In the new system, online journals would now be accessible by members of DU library from home, thus making it convenient for the research scholars or students to refer these, as per their convenience. As of now, they have to compulsorily visit the library if they want to read or refer any journal available online.

Research scholars told that journals available in world class libraries can be accessed online from anywhere in the world by their members. Even journals at library of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) can be referred from anywhere in world.

DU library System is a big network of 37 libraries spread all over DU and its affiliated colleges, having 9 major libraries that include Central library at Arts Faculty, Central Science library, Ratan Tata library and several others.

University librarian informed that DU library has 73 databases and about 60,000 online journals. “About 1500 to 1600 journals are offline but soon they would also be made available online,” said Dr. Dharam Veer Singh.
