Two days after a 25-year-old man, a juice vendor, was killed in an hit and run accident at Central Delhi’s Bahadur Shah Zafar marg on Saturday night, Delhi Police on Monday claimed to have made a breakthrough in the case. Police said that they have identified the errant driver of the white Audi which hit the vendor. Manoj Yadav was hit from the speeding vehicle and had fell on the iron railing which left him impaled.

A senior police officer said that one Rajeev Malhotra, a property dealer who runs his shop in Ansari road has been called for questioning. Malhotra is a resident of Greater Kailash, the police said while adding that they found out the errant Audi car after carrying out extensive search for the high end luxury car across various auto mobile garages in Delhi.

“We suspected that after the accident on Saturday night, the driver would take the car for repair. Based on this lead, we traced the car to a garage in Anand Vihar. The key evidence was that after the accident, the car had suffered some dents following which the owner took the car. The car owner, Rajeev is being questioned because it is still not sure whether he was the one driving the Audi at the time of the accident. We have recovered the white Audi,” said a senior police official.

Police further said that in the absence of the CCTV cameras near the accident spot on Bahadur Shah Zafar marg, they are scrutinising the call records of Rajeev Malhotra, who is suspected to be behind the wheels at the time of the accident.

Manoj is survived by his pregnant wife and a three-year-old daughter.

In the mortuary of the lNJP hospital, a relative of the deceased said that “excited for Diwali, Manoj had already booked railway tickets to his native place in Bihar.”

Another senior official said that they have taken statements of the eyewitness present at the spot.
