DJB aims to achieve energy self-sufficiency by year-end

In its bid to reduce pollution and save power, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is moving towards self-sufficiency in power generation. Even though the DJB already has a gas-based power generation unit which produces 42,000 units of power per day, the target now is to generate up to one lakh units of power by the end of year.

“The biogas generated from sewage treatment plants (STPs), which was earlier flared up and added to the pollution, will now be used to generate electricity. For this, the construction of new STPs has also started near Delhi Gate and Papan Kalan,” DJB CEO SS Yadav said. DJB has clarified that all water tanks and STPs will be used to procure solar power, nearby buildings and vacant lands will also be used to generate solar power. “We will utilise rooftops of the buildings and vacant lands as solar parks,” said Yadav, adding that the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has agreed to financially support the entire project. Currently, the water treatment plant (WTP) has the potential of generating 50 megawatts of power, said Yadav.

Now, interface with DJB via SMS

In order to improve ties with over 21 lakh customers, the Delhi Jal Board will now start regular e-interaction with its consumers via SMS. Consumers can now get updates related to their pending bills or complaint about any disruption of water supply in their area through an SMS.

For this, consumers will just have to link their mobile numbers with the 10-digit KNO (connection number) by sending an SMS or registering at DJB Revenue Department website www.djb.gov.in. The registration via SMS can be done by typing DJBIN <space> <10-DIGIT K NO.> and sending it via SMS to 7738299899. “This facility will be extremely useful to the consumers to get updates on their bill, payment and water supply situation in their area on water related issue,” DJB CEO SS Yadav said.
