Wednesday afternoon saw a heinous assault on a deaf and dumb girl by a man who is physically-challenged himself.
The 12-year-old was allegedly raped by her 40-year-old neighbour in north-west Delhi's Bhalswa Dairy area, for which the accused, Chhatulal, has been arrested. The incident sparked protests at the local police station, while angry family members threw stones at Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital (BJRM), where the teenager is recuperating. They smashed several windows.
Around 1.45 pm, the girl was playing outside her home when "Chhatulal, who runs an electronic machinery shop, lured her into his room and raped her," said a police official. The injured and crying girl somehow managed to reach her home but was found unconscious at the doorstep by her mother. Initially too frightened to talk, she later revealed her ordeal to her mother, who immediately informed her husband. The locals gathered and thrashed Chhatulal.
