A 16-year-old girl committed suicide with her grandfather’s licensed 12 bore gun at her residence in Palam in South West Delhi on Wednesday night. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the girl was under depression as there was no cooperation from the family members. The parents of the girl are divorced. The victim has been identified as Pooja (16) and she was a student of Class X.
According to police, the incident took place around 11 pm in South West Delhi’s Palam extension area. Pooja was under severe distress owing to the separation of her parents and was unable to cope with it. She was in a way abandoned as there was nobody who could listen to her tribulations. It appears that the minor girl decided to end her life as she found no support from any quarter. Her father and grandfather had gone out on Wednesday night and her grandmother who normally stayed in the house was also not present.
A police official said that Pooja decided to end her life and she took her grandfathers gun from the bed-box which was locked and protected and shot herself on the left side of the neck. The incident was reported to the police after the neighbours heard the gun shot.
The girl was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhya hospital where she was declared dead. later, autopsy was conducted and the body was handed over to her family members for cremation.
Police said that her grandfather used to lock his gun and keep it with full protection in his room. Even after this how Pooja managed to take it, is a question that needs to be answered because it was the responsibility of the licence holder to keep the gun in safe custody. He now faces penal action under the law, the police official said.
“The girl’s father and grandfather are drunkards. Her mother stayed in Bawal on the borders of Harayana and Rajasthan with her brother. Pooja was disturbed as she was not being taken care of by her father. Further investigations are on,” said the police official.
