Union Transport Ministry Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday asked the PWD of the Delhi Government to explore the feasibility of an elevated corridor or a tunnel connecting Anand Vihar to ITO to get the commuters rid of perennial traffic congestion on Vikas Marg. The PWD has been asked to submit a report within a month.

The issue of traffic congestion on Vikas Marg was raised by East Delhi MP Mahesh Giri during a meeting with the Union Minister on Wednesday.

Giri said the entire stretch remains heavily congested and the situation aggravated during the morning and evening peak hours causing much hassles to the commuters. “The Transport Minister has asked the PWD to explore the feasibility of an elevated corridor or an underground passage from Anand Vihar till ITO. The PWD officials have been asked to consult expert agencies and submit a report to the Ministry within a month,” Giri said.

In another development, the Centre has also asked the Delhi Government to explore the possibility of connecting the proposed elevated corridor to Meerut with the GT Road from Shahdara. South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri said the proposal was floated in the meeting with Gadkari to which he directed the officials to examine the possibility.

“The Government is considering another 9-km elevated road from Shahdara connecting the 52-km elevated corridor to Meerut. This will also facilitate a large number of motorists coming from GT Road and North East Delhi to have a smooth drive up to Meerut,” Bidhuri said.Once complete, commuters will be able to reach Meerut in 45 to 60 minutes and cut travel time to Haridwar and Dehradun by almost an hour. The proposed corridor would start from Nizamuddin Bridge. The stretch between Nizamuddin Bridge and Dasna in Ghaziabad is one of the most congested stretches in the NCR.
