Delhi Metro Phase III a landmark for city

Pragya Singh

Completion of Delhi Metro phase III will not only provide lakhs direct connectivity from Kashmere Gate to the satellite town of Faridabad, but also connect all other Metro corridors.

The Violet line (Central Secretariat to Badarpur) is the only line which will undergo extension from both ends, thereby providing connectivity to all parts of the National Capital, along with easing commuting till Faridabad.

With a length of 43.21 km, the proposed corridor will have 32 Metro stations - 21 elevated and 11 underground. The corridor will have five interchange stations at Mandi House, Central Secretariat, Kashmere Gate, Kalkaji and lajpat Nagar.

After Gurgaon and Noida, Delhi Metro will once again transcend boundaries under phase III - this time entering Faridabad and smudging boundaries further.

Extension of the Violet line will not only ease passenger volumes at the busy Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate interchange stations but will also provide direct connectivity from Kashmere Gate to Faridabad.

The 13.8-km extension from Badarpur to Faridabad will have nine stations - Sarai, NHPC Chowk, Mewala Maharajpur, Sector 27A, Badkal Mor, Old Faridabad, Ajronda, Faridabad New Town and YMCA Chowk. The line will have its maintenance depot at Sector 20A.

A detailed project report (DPR) of the Badarpur to Faridabad section has pegged a daily ridership of 1,80,000 commuters. This section will commence operations by 2015.

From the other end, the line is being extended to Kashmere Gate via Mandi House from Central Secretariat. This 9.37-km underground corridor will have seven upcoming stations at Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and Kashmere Gate.

“Work on this stretch is progressing at a rapid pace and the Central Secretariat to Mandi House stretch of this extension will be thrown open for the public six months ahead of the schedule - by March next year. This will take away 40 per cent of the load from Rajiv Chowk Metro Station,” said a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson.

The Violet line connecting Central Secretariat with Badarpur is 20.04 km long. After undergoing extension from both the ends, its total length will increase to 43.21 km. The line will connect places of historical importance in old Delhi such as Jama Masjid, Daryaganj and Red Fort and underground stations will be constructed using the cut and cover technology.

There will also be a smooth transition. At Mandi House, the line will provide interchange with the Dwarka-Noida-Anand Vihar corridor, while at Kashmere Gate it will provide connectivity to the Dilshad Garden-Rithala corridor.

At Central Secretariat, the corridor will connect with the Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line, while at Kalkaji, it will provide transition to the upcoming Janakpuri to Botanical Garden Corridor. At lajpat Nagar, the line will connect with the longest proposed corridor of Delhi Metro, which is currently under construction - Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar.

With ample interchange options, the upcoming corridor will thus make commuting easier to and fro Faridabad from any part of Delhi.
