AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that he was “personally against the formation of a coalition Government”. He said that he decided to go to people of Delhi for a referendum following a difference of opinion over the issue within the party. During the meeting of MlAs, a section was of the view that AAP should not shy away from forming the Government as the Congress was extending unconditional support.
“I was personally against the forming of a Government. Because we had maintained that we won’t take support from or give any to the Congress or the BJP. But, off late, a section of people started to say that we should form the Government while another section was opposed to it, so we decided to go back to people to decide,” he said.
“Till now, political decisions were taken behind closed doors and after voting was over, there was no active participation of common man. But, we have changed it and this is participatory democracy and many have welcomed it,” he said. Meanwhile, within 24 hours of announcing that the Aam Aadmi Party needs public opinion on whether it should form the Government in the Capital, the party received over four lakh SMSes, phone calls and responses through social networking sites. The party has also started the distribution of 25 lakh letters which are being distributed from door-to-door in all constituencies by party workers.
According to some members of the party, the AAP has received nearly 4,20,000 messages in response to whether the party should join the Congress and form a Government. “letters are being distributed personally, door-to-door, with the details of ways to send responses. The letter has the mobile number and social networking sites’ links,” said a party member.
