DCW counsels women selling illegal liquor to close their biz

The Delhi Commission for Women claimed to have successfully counseled women selling illegal liquor at JJ Colony in Bakkarwalof Outer Delhi to close their illicit business. The DCW acted after it received a  complaint about illegal liquor business running in the area and making it unsafe for women and children in the area.

“It’s a fact that Delhi has become a hub of sale of illegal liquor and drugs. Police refuses to act in the matter and the culprits are able to hood wink the system and act with impunity. The Commission has tried a new strategy for fighting the problem. We will continue to leave no stone unturned to ensure that Delhi becomes free of illegal liquor and drugs,” said DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal.

According to DCW spokesperson, “A complaint was received on August 2018 from a woman in JJ Colony Bakkarwal, wherein, the complainant informed the Commission that an illegal liquor shop is operating near her residence. The complainant informed the Commission that sexual harassment is increasing near her residence due to men drinking in open.”

However, since the Commission felt that registering an FIR and police action on these illegal liquor sellers had little impact, DCW member Firdaus Khan allegedly resorted to a new strategy of counseling the sellers.

“The illegal liqour sellers understood the sensitivity of the situation and agreed to shut down their business. As a follow up, the DCW Mahila Panchayat has regularly crossed-checked on the ground and the accused have stopped selling illegal liqour for the past 4 months,” DCW spokesperson stated.
