Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal who was sitting on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 10 days demanding capital punishment for rapists within six months of their conviction has been admitted to a city hospital after health condition got deteriorated and she fell unconscious on Sunday morning.
Maliwal’s health condition got worse from Saturday night and the doctors also advised her to visit the hospital for treatment and end the protest but she refused to budge. On Sunday morning, she was taken to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital after she fainted.
According to a DCW member, she was initially taken to the emergency ward of the hospital since she was unconscious. Later when she regained consciousness, she refused to allow doctors to put her on intravenous fluids.
Maliwal was shifted to a special ward, where she was put on intravenous fluids, said the member, adding that her condition was stated to be stable. DCW chief’s supporters were stationed outside the hospital. According to a health bulletin, the uric acid in her blood had reached dangerous levels and could damage kidneys.
Maliwal was on a hunger strike for over 10 days at the Samta Sthal near Raj Ghat. She on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that Disha Bill, which mandates disposal of cases of atrocities against women within 21 days and handing out the death penalty, is implemented in the entire country.
Further, DCW chief before falling unconscious wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding immediate implementation of the Disha Bill in the entire country, which mandates disposal of cases of atrocities against women within 21 days and handing out the death penalty.
Maliwal also expressed sadness over the “indifferent attitude” of the Central Government on the issue of women’s safety despite her hunger strike. This was her second letter to PM Modi after she sat on the hunger strike on December 3 demanding capital punishment for rapists within six months of their conviction.
