Cutoffs cut down to size

In order to ensure more accurate cutoffs this admission season, the Delhi University has devised new methods to segregate data and analyse it. According to officials in the Dean Students’ Welfare office, the data will now be segregated at every 0.25 per cent of the best of four subjects’ aggregate instead of the earlier 0.50 per cent. So now applicants who have received 99 per cent will be placed together and those who have attained 99.25 per cent will be placed separately.

This move comes in lieu of the increased number of 90 pointers who are applying to the university this year. “Since so many students have applied this year, there is a need for advanced data analysis. We want to avoid over admissions, thus now colleges will have a clear idea of how many students come under one cutoff bracket,” said an official.

At the moment the offline forms are still being uploaded online. Once they are uploaded online, the already existing online data will be merged with the offline data. “Then we will analyse the data in order to segment it. This segmentation used to be done in 0.5 per cent intervals earlier, but now it will be done at 0.25 per cent intervals to increase probability. Colleges will then be sent the data on a CD and then they can take out their cutoffs thereafter,” said Dr Gulshan Sahni, Deputy Dean, Students’ Welfare.

In context of cutoffs, meetings have also been lined up with principals of colleges to inform them about the nuances of the admission process. “We will request them to follow the instructions of the university to facilitate smooth admissions without an additional rider which used to be imposed in the past. The principals will also be expected to upload live data of admissions and cancellations on their respective websites,” said Malay Neerav, Joint Dean, Students’ Welfare. The meetings will be held on Wednesday and Thursday in groups of 10-12 principals each.
