Cops flog senior citizen to death

Staff Reporter

A 67-year-old man was flogged to death by three policemen when they were denied hush money for pitching a tent in a park for Ramlila. The victim’s family alleged that the men in uniform thrashed him following an altercation. However, a senior police officer denied the accusation.

The incident took place in Sector 3 of Rohini in North West Delhi. Vimal Chaudhary, the son of the deceased Dr Iqbal Singh, alleged that his father was battered by three policemen in a park in Rohini Sector 3 where he had organised a groundbreaking ceremony for Ramlila around 2.30 am on Sunday.

“Blood was oozing from my father’s mouth. With help from neighbours, we rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” said Chaudhary. He said his father had the requisite permission from Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and local police to arrange Ramlila on the park grounds but on Saturday night the three policemen in question demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. “When my father denied them their payoff, he was beaten up,” Chaudhary alleged.

However, police is rejecting allegations made by Chaudhary saying none of the policemen had interacted with Singh. “An inquiry has been instituted. We are still awaiting the post mortem report,” said a senior officer.  According to him, neither any external injury nor any bruises were found on the victim’s body. Singh incidentally was a former president of the Ramlila Committee and a resident in Rohini Sector 3.
