The Delhi Police operation to arrest infamous snatcher and thief Shahid alias Mogli in Sanjay Gandhi Camps, Chanakya Puri, on Wednesday evening backfired as some residents attacked them. At least seven policemen were injured in the attack, according to police officials.

Police, which registered a case of rioting and obstructing the public servant in performing their duty against the miscreants, said sub-inspector Ashok Kumar of South Campus police station in South Delhi, along with his team, had gone to arrest Mogli when the violent incident took place.

When the team reached the locality, Mogli’s father, brother and other neighbours assembled and created a ruckus over the arrest of Mogli in connection with a snatching in South Campus area, said police officials, adding that he is facing at least six cases of snatching and theft in various police

stations.

It is understood that agitated residents started throwing stones and used sticks to attack police. Also, the attackers damaged police vans, said the official.

Sensing more trouble, SI Ashok Kumar immediately sent a message on wireless set and requested the New Delhi district police to dispatch extra forces. And as the forces arrived, police took Mogli out of the locality.

Mogli’s elder brother identified as Sabir Ali — facing criminal cases — was also arrested for rioting, said police official.

To control the crowd, police used mild lathi charge in which a few residents also got injured, said sources.

Seven injured policemen — four from Chankyapuri police station and three from

South Campus police station — were taken to a

Government hospital from where they were discharged after the preliminary

medication.
