Over a thousand workers on Friday morning gathered at leighton's construction site situated on the Golf Course road to protest against the construction company over a lack of basic facilities and poor working conditions on the site. The Construction Company - leighton - is developing a DlF project on Golf Course Road.
The workers resorted to violence and damaged glass of some under-construction flats. They also raised slogans against the company officials. The protesters alleged that they were being given poor quality food, being retrenched without notice, and were deprived of basic amenities.
The protest began at 8 am and came to an end almost two hours after Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Police officials with over 500 police personnel and officials from the labour department reached the spot and took hold of the situation. They also convinced the workers that their all demands will be fulfilled and also ordered the company to provide basic facilities to the workers without any further delay.
"The working condition for the workers is very poor. The officials are not providing proper food to the workers. We are on company payroll but there is no drinking water on the site and from a couple of days we are surviving only on potatoes," Ram Singh, a worker on the site, said.
"I have had to spent many days without food and it is painful. We have to work for over 17 hours a day and if we need drinking water we have gone down from the 30th floor for it. The company officials force us to take water from the ground floor. We are being exploited," Prakash Raj, another worker, said.
The workers also alleged that they had warned the company that if their problems were not solved soon, they would be forced to start a protest against them.
The workers further said, they had raised their problems many times but got a reply the problems have been resolved. However, nothing was done on the ground.
"We are doing to get the issues resolved at the earliest we have held a meeting between the workers and company officials and they assured that all the demands will be fulfilled soon," Sub Divisional Magistrate, Bharat Bhushan Gogia, said.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of leighton said, "The matter has been resolved the company has accepted their demands. Soon the workers will start work on the site.
