Taking a note of several anomalies in the draft report of the delimitation of 272 municipal wards, hundreds of Congress workers led by Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken on Monday protested outside the office of the State Election Commission (SEC), demanding removal of anomalies from the draft report. The Congress leaders also submitted a memorandum to SEC to this effect.

In the memorandum, Maken highlighted anomalies in the draft report of the delimitation of municipal wards across the city. According to Maken, the draft report has many anomalies but there are violation of criteria qua area of revised wards exceeding the area of Assembly constituencies and the parliamentary constituencies, violation of criteria qua population of each wards, to remain same, throughout Delhi, as far as possible, Criteria qua no. of wards, in Assembly Constituencies completely faulty and irrational.

Many ward constituencies carved out without application of mind, he said adding the notification of the l-G dated September 18, 2015 clearly states that “whereas a boundary of a ward in a corporation should be carved within the boundary of Assembly constituency and shall not cross it”.

Maken said that in present delimitation carried out by the State Election Commission, the population in 40 wards exceeds the average population of the corporation, whereas in about 14 wards, the recommended population is less than average population of that corporation.
