Even though the Congress finished third in the Bawana by-election, which was won by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the party gained some lost ground by securing 24.21 per cent vote share as compared to 7.87 per cent in the 2015 Assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party despite a thumping win has seen a dip in its vote share by receiving 45.43 per cent votes as compared to 57.91. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured 27.18 as compared to 31.40 in 2015 Assembly election, said Sharmistha Mukherjee, chief spokesperson of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.
Mukherjee said Congress candidate Surender Kumar has secured 31,919 votes in the bypoll is much more than double the votes received in the election held in 2015. The party had secured 14,846 votes in 2015. "Comparing the data from both the Assembly election, it is clearly visible that a big blow in the vote share of the AAP which had won 67 out of 70 seats in the 2015 Assembly poll.
She, however, congratulated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the win but also alleged that the entire Cabinet had campaigned at Bawana for last four months to induce the voters to vote in favour of the AAP candidate.
Senior party leader Chattar Singh said the Congress won in two wards such as Nangal Thakran and Put Khurd. He also mentioned that out of 28 rounds, the party led in eight rounds while the BJP could lead only in one round. Highlighting the comparative voting percentage, he also said "The AAP candidate polled 1,09,259 votes in 2015 election with 57.91 per cent vote share while this time, the party has secured only 59,886, resulting in a sharp fall in its voter share to 45.43 per cent, approx 50 per cent dip in the votes.”
However, the BJP, which got 35,834 votes in this bypoll with 27.18 per cent vote share to finish second, also suffered a huge dip in its vote per centage,".
